Particulate Matter (PM10) and Air Pollution in Kathmandu - A Research

Particulate Matter of less than 10 microns in size (PM10) is a source of air pollution. It is present at a significant level in Kathmandu Valley's air quality. Even though substantial investment has been made to improve the city’s air quality, no improvement has been realized as yet. COMMITTED conducted a research to determine if construction related dust particles was one of the sources of pollution and also approximated its magnitude. In other researches conducted by other organizations and individuals construction related dust particles were not considered as a potential PM10 pollution factor. COMMITTED's research indicates that the construction materials could have substantial adverse impact on the city's air quality. The research concludes that in the past thirteen years (1990-2003) approximately one million cubic feet of construction related dust particles such as sand, cement, bricks, and coarse aggregates were deposited on the streets of Kathmandu City. This accumulation is increasing every day and needs immediate measures to halt further deposition.
