Kanya Mandir Rehabilitation Project

Existing Conditions

Kanya Mandir School currently lacks the basic infrastructure necessary for upbringing young children. The school currently has two buildings for school use and one building rented out to generate revenue. The school runs classes from kindergarten up to grade twelve. In total there are 726 students ranging between 4 students in grade twelve to 141 students in grade ten. Grade 9-C currently has 68 students in one room. Majority of Kanya Mandir’s classrooms are overcrowded. Tthere is only one laboratory for all physics, chemistry, and biology practical lessons. The school as yet does not offer any computer classes. The only vocational trainings offered are cooking, knitting, and stitching. The existing library is small and infested with termite. Immediate remedy is necessary to salvage the precious book volumes that serve the students. All buildings are structurally challenged and traces of mold are visible in damp section of the walls. Several locations have cracks on the walls and ceilings. The school also lacks a proper play ground. There is a poorly maintained inadequate play area for children.

The school has two toilets: one for the students and the other shared by the male and female staffs. Both toilets are not connected to the city’s sewer system but are served by a septic system that has failed. Within twenty feet from the septic system is a ground water well that serves the school’s population. Because the failed septic location is in close proximity of the well, use of the water from the well could lead to serious health hazards.

Current times for Kanya Mandir is not ideal. The Ministry of Education and Culture, His Majesty’s Government of Nepal, recently declared Kanya Mandir a “community school”. This means that the school is eligible for government funding and self management with community input. However, the limited resources from the ministry are insufficient, forcing the management to levy charges from the students to breakeven. The management committee is struggling to meet all needs and concurrently is burdened with the pressure to accommodate more students every passing year. Times are indeed extremely difficult for Kanya Mandir.
